The Guide
What the Submarine Dive Is Like, and Who It Suits
Fifty minutes on the seabed off Puerto Calero, dry and at surface pressure. Here is what you see, how you get there, who can go and when a try dive is the better choice.
The Lanzarote submarine is a 44-seat passenger submarine that dives from Puerto Calero marina, on the south coast between Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, normally to 25 to 30 metres, where it settles on the seabed beside three shipwrecks while you watch the fish through 22 large windows. The dive lasts about 50 minutes, the cabin stays at surface pressure, so it is open to anyone from the age of 2 who can climb two short ladders, and a free bus collects you from the main resorts. It is the one way to reach Lanzarote’s seabed itself without getting wet, rated 4.6 from 1,573 reviews and from US$72 a person (checked October 2026).

What happens on the dive
Be at the Submarine Safaris office in Puerto Calero marina 30 minutes before your dive time. You board through a hatch on top of the submarine, down two short vertical ladders, into a cabin about the size of the inside of a bus: air-conditioned and light, with an aisle down the middle like an aircraft’s and large windows along the sides. The submarine then dives, normally to 25 to 30 metres (up to about 100 feet), and settles on the seabed, where three wrecks lie and fish swim around them; from your seat you can also watch the pilots in the cockpit.
An audio guide, with headphones, explains the sea life and the ecosystem in ten languages, among them English, Spanish, German, French and Dutch. Back on the surface you are given a dive certificate and a fish chart, and you have time to look around the marina. Food and drink are not served on board; the office sells drinks and snacks before and after.
Up to seven dives a day leave, six days a week, so the calendar usually offers a choice of times. How deep the submarine goes and what you see has the detail.
Getting to Puerto Calero
The bus is free, but which dive it serves depends on where you are staying:
- From Playa Blanca: the bus serves the 11:00 and 13:00 dives.
- From Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise: the bus serves the 12:00 and 14:00 dives.
- Driving: Puerto Calero is a marina village just west of Puerto del Carmen; the meeting point is the Submarine Safaris office at Marina de Puerto Calero, Módulo C, Local 2.
Choose the pickup when you book, and you are given the pickup time and point with your booking.
Is the submarine worth it?
It is worth it if you want to see the seabed and cannot or do not want to dive: young children, grandparents, non-swimmers, pregnant women and anyone with ear problems all fit, which no try dive allows. It is less worth it if you are a confident swimmer of 8 or over who would happily put on a mask: a first scuba dive from the beach, from US$83, puts you in the water with the fish. The fish are wild, so no sighting is ever promised. The reviews guide sets out who comes away pleased, and children, pregnancy and access covers who can go.

Lanzarote Submarine FAQ
The questions people ask before the submarine dive at Puerto Calero, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
From about US$72 an adult on GetYourGuide, and €65 list price (€61.75 online) for an adult and €42 (€39.90 online) for a child of 2 to 14 on Submarine Safaris' own price list, both read in October 2026. The bus from Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise is included at no extra cost, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before. The price guide sets out what you pay for and how the fares compare.
Down to 30 metres (about 100 feet), where it settles on the seabed. The cabin stays at normal atmospheric pressure all the way down, so your ears do not pop and nobody has to equalise. How deep it goes and what you see.
The dive itself lasts about 50 minutes, and with boarding the trip takes about an hour. You are asked to be at the Submarine Safaris office in Puerto Calero marina 30 minutes before your dive time, and if you take the free bus, add the ride from your resort each way.
The seabed off Puerto Calero, three shipwrecks resting on it, and the fish that swim freely around them, through 22 large view ports. The fish are wild, so no sighting is guaranteed, but the water off this coast holds a wide range of subtropical fish, and you are given a fish chart to match what you see. What you see on the dive.
Less than people expect: the cabin is about the size of the inside of a bus, air-conditioned and light, with an aisle like an aircraft's and 22 large windows for its 44 seats. The tighter moment is the hatch: you climb down two short vertical ladders to get in. If enclosed spaces are a real fear for you, a snorkel trip keeps you in open water. Who the submarine suits.
Very unlikely: the submarine travels below the waves, so it does not rock the way a boat does. That makes it a better choice than a boat trip for anyone who suffers from motion sickness.
Yes, from the age of 2; children under 2 cannot dive, because of the safety equipment on board. On Submarine Safaris' own price list, children of 2 to 14 pay a child fare. Everyone on board, children included, has to be able to climb the two short ladders through the hatch. Children, pregnancy and access.
Yes: the cabin stays at surface pressure throughout, so the dive does not affect pregnancy, heart conditions or ear problems. That is the main difference from a try dive, which is not open to pregnant women or people with heart problems.
No: you board and leave through a hatch, down two short vertical ladders, and you have to climb them without help, so wheelchairs and mobility scooters cannot go on board. The whale and dolphin catamaran from the same marina is not suitable for wheelchair users either.
Yes, and you can try it with no experience: several dive centres run first dives from calm beaches in Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen, in small groups. Beginners can also dive the Museo Atlántico, the underwater sculpture museum off Playa Blanca, from the age of 12. Scuba diving in Lanzarote for beginners.
There are glass-bottom boat trips from Playa Blanca along the Papagayo coast, but none is sold on GetYourGuide. A glass panel shows you the shallows from the surface; the submarine takes you down to the seabed. Glass-bottom boat or submarine.
