Scuba Diving in Lanzarote for Beginners

First scuba dives in Lanzarote with no experience: four beginner dives compared, from the beach or at the Museo Atlántico sculptures, ages, flying rules, and when the submarine is better (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Lanzarote is a good place for a first scuba dive: several dive centres take complete beginners from calm beaches, with no boat and no licence needed. For a first dive we would book Barracuda’s: a briefing on the beach, then a walk into the water with one instructor for every two divers, rated 5.0 from 446 reviews and from US$83 a person (checked October 2026). You need to be 8 or over and in good health; for anyone younger, pregnant or with a heart condition, the submarine is the way to see the seabed.

What a first dive involves

Map of the south-east of Lanzarote showing Puerto Calero marina on the south coast, Puerto del Carmen and the airport to the east, Arrecife and Costa Teguise further north-east, and Playa Blanca at the southern tip
The beginner dives start from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and, for the Museo Atlántico, Playa Blanca; the submarine leaves from Puerto Calero.

Each of these starts with a briefing on land: how the equipment works, how to breathe underwater and the hand signals you use there. You then practise a few skills in shallow water before the dive itself, with your instructor close beside you. No licence or experience is needed; what is needed is reasonable health. The dive centres turn away children under 8 (under 12 for the Museo Atlántico), pregnant women, and people with heart problems or epilepsy, and some add high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems or claustrophobia.

Leave time before your flight home. After one dive you must wait at least 12 hours before flying, and Dive College asks for 18 hours after the Museo Atlántico dive; plan your first dive early in the holiday.

The Museo Atlántico

The Museo Atlántico is an underwater museum of sculptures by the British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, on the seabed of Las Coloradas bay near Playa Blanca, at between 12 and 15 metres. Beginners can dive it with an instructor after a practice session, from the age of 12, as Dive College’s dive does to a maximum of 12 metres.

The submarine or a dive?

A dive puts you in the water among the fish, weightless; the submarine keeps you dry in a cabin at surface pressure and goes deeper, to 30 metres, but behind glass. The submarine takes children from 2, pregnant women and people with heart or ear problems, none of whom can do a try dive, and it costs from US$72 a person. How deep the submarine goes and what you see has the detail.

If you only want to see the fish from the surface, the guided snorkel from Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen, US$61, takes swimmers from 8 along the reefs with a dive instructor, and the Sea Trek underwater walk in Costa Teguise, US$89, lets you walk the seabed in a helmet fed with air from the surface, for 30 minutes.
